The Nishi-ki Otsubame is a large, exceptionally beautiful diurnal moth of the family Sphingidae found in Madagascar. Known in English as the “Madagascan sunset moth,” it is recognized for its distinctive wings, which feature a combination of vivid red, orange, blue, green, and black hues.

Parts of its wings have a metallic sheen, and the colors may appear to change depending on how the light hits them. Another characteristic of this species is that, although it is a moth, it is active during the day.

The larvae feed on plants of the Anacardiaceae family native to Madagascar, and it is believed that the chemicals they absorb from these plants during the larval stage are utilized by the adults as a defense against predators.

Due to its striking appearance, it is one of the most popular and beautiful species among insect specimens and is traded worldwide as a specimen for display and collection.
