This species of flat lizard belongs to the family Tetragondidae within the suborder Iguanidae and is found in southwestern South Africa.

Its most distinctive feature is the extremely vivid body coloration seen in adult males. Ranging from blue to blue-green from the head to the front half of the body, and turning reddish-brown from the rear half to the tail, it possesses a striking coloration for a lizard inhabiting rocky terrain. In contrast, females and juveniles have a brown base color with white vertical stripes, giving them an appearance that differs significantly from that of the males.

They inhabit primarily dry, rocky areas and rocky regions in South Africa, using crevices in rocks and similar hiding places for shelter. While their diet consists mainly of small animals such as insects, they are also known to consume plant matter.

This species is currently classified as Platysaurus capensis; however, it historically included populations that are now considered separate species, and it remains a group subject to ongoing taxonomic research.

### Cape Hyrax (*Procavia capensis*)

**A fascinating African mammal with a surprising connection to elephants.**

The Cape Hyrax (*Procavia capensis*), also known as the Rock Hyrax or Rock Dassie, is a small, stocky mammal native to rocky habitats throughout much of Africa and parts of the Middle East.

Despite its appearance resembling a large guinea pig or marmot, the Cape Hyrax is not a rodent. Hyraxes belong to their own unique mammalian group and are surprisingly closely related to elephants and other paenungulate mammals. Their evolutionary history makes them one of the most fascinating examples of how dramatically appearance can differ from genetic relationships.

Cape Hyraxes are highly social and are commonly found living in groups among rocky outcrops, cliffs, and boulder formations. They are primarily herbivorous and spend much of their time basking in the sun or foraging around their rocky habitat.

Their compact body, rounded ears, expressive eyes, and distinctive facial features make them an exceptionally unusual addition to a specialist exotic mammal collection.

Although *Procavia capensis* is classified as **Least Concern** from a conservation perspective, live Cape Hyraxes remain uncommon in the international exotic animal trade. Opportunities to acquire this species outside zoological collections are therefore limited.

**Scientific Name:** *Procavia capensis*
**Common Names:** Cape Hyrax / Rock Hyrax / Rock Dassie
**Family:** Procaviidae
**Distribution:** Africa and parts of the Middle East
**Activity:** Primarily diurnal
**Diet:** Herbivorous
**Social Behavior:** Highly social
**Conservation Status:** Least Concern (IUCN)

**An extraordinary species for experienced exotic mammal keepers and specialist collections, particularly for those interested in unusual African fauna and unique evolutionary lineages.**
