**Calabaria reinhardtii**, commonly known as the **Calabar Ground Python**, **Calabar Ground Boa**, or **African Burrowing Python**, is a highly specialized fossorial snake native to the humid forests of West and Central Africa. Despite its traditional association with pythons, its classification has been debated, and it is currently placed in the family Calabariidae. This secretive species is strongly adapted to a burrowing lifestyle. It inhabits rainforest leaf litter, swamp forests, secondary forests, and overgrown agricultural areas, where it spends much of its time beneath the soil, leaf litter, fallen vegetation, or inside abandoned animal burrows. It is primarily nocturnal and crepuscular, with activity often increasing after rainfall. The Calabar Ground Python has a distinctive cylindrical body, short tail, and relatively small head. Its dark brown to blackish coloration is broken by contrasting reddish, yellowish, or grayish markings. When threatened, it can form a defensive ball and conceal its head, contributing to its unusual reputation as a “two-headed” snake. Its diet consists primarily of small mammals such as rodents and shrews. Reptile eggs and other small prey have also been recorded. It is an oviparous species, with females producing relatively small clutches of large eggs. Studies of wild populations have recorded clutches ranging from a few eggs to larger clutches, although small clutches are typical. **Scientific name:** *Calabaria reinhardtii* **Common names:** Calabar Ground Python, Calabar Ground Boa, African Burrowing Python **Family:** Calabariidae **Distribution:** West and Central Africa, including Cameroon **Habitat:** Tropical rainforest, swamp forest, secondary forest, plantations, and overgrown agricultural land **Lifestyle:** Fossorial, nocturnal and crepuscular **Diet:** Primarily small mammals, especially rodents and shrews **Reproduction:** Oviparous **Adult size:** Generally around 0.6–1.0 m **Notable features:** Specialized burrowing lifestyle, cylindrical body, short tail, and defensive ball-forming behavior
