**Diacamma sp.** is a fascinating group of ponerine ants famous for their highly unusual reproductive system. Unlike most ants, Diacamma colonies do not have a conventional queen. Instead, reproduction is carried out by a single mated worker known as a **gamergate**. All newly emerged female workers initially possess a pair of small thoracic structures called **gemmae**, which are derived from ancestral wings. The gamergate retains her gemmae, while the other workers normally have their gemmae removed shortly after emergence. This prevents them from becoming reproductive individuals and allows a single gamergate to control reproduction within the colony. Diacamma workers are medium-sized, active predators with a powerful sting. They forage primarily on the ground and in leaf litter, hunting small insects and other arthropods. Colonies are generally much smaller than those of highly populous ants, often consisting of several dozen to a few hundred workers. The genus is distributed from India through Southeast Asia to Australia. Several species occur in Thailand, so the exact species should be confirmed before assigning a species-level name. This colony is supplied with a **gamergate**, making it particularly interesting for keepers who want to observe one of the most unusual reproductive systems found in ants. **Genus:** Diacamma **Common Name:** Queenless Ponerine Ant / Spine-jawed Ant **Distribution:** South & Southeast Asia to Australia **Lifestyle:** Predatory **Reproductive System:** Gamergate-based **Queen:** No conventional queen caste **Colony Size:** Usually tens to a few hundred workers **Diet:** Insects and other small arthropods **Hibernation:** None for tropical species **Sting:** Yes
