**Nasalis larvatus** **Common Names:** Proboscis Monkey, Long-nosed Monkey The Proboscis Monkey (*Nasalis larvatus*) is a distinctive primate endemic to the island of Borneo. It is best known for the remarkably large, pendulous nose of adult males, which is much less pronounced in females and juveniles. Males are also considerably larger than females and typically have a reddish-brown coat, pale underparts, and a long, white-gray tail. Proboscis Monkeys are highly adapted to life in the wetland forests of Borneo. They inhabit mangrove forests, riverine forests, peat swamps, and other areas close to rivers and waterways. They are excellent swimmers and are known to enter the water readily when moving between forest areas or escaping predators. Their diet consists mainly of young leaves, shoots, unripe fruits, and other plant material. Their specialized digestive system allows them to process a diet rich in leaves and relatively difficult-to-digest vegetation. They spend much of their time feeding and resting in trees near waterways. Proboscis Monkeys are social animals that typically live in groups consisting of females, juveniles, and one or more adult males, although larger social aggregations may form. Males produce distinctive vocalizations, and their enlarged noses are thought to play a role in communication and sexual attraction. The Proboscis Monkey is endemic to Borneo and is closely associated with wetland ecosystems. Habitat loss, particularly the conversion and degradation of mangrove, riverine, and peat swamp forests, has contributed to its decline. Its unusual appearance and specialized lifestyle make it one of the most recognizable primates of Southeast Asia. **Scientific Name:** *Nasalis larvatus* **Family:** Cercopithecidae **Common Names:** Proboscis Monkey, Long-nosed Monkey **Distribution:** Borneo **Habitat:** Mangrove forests, riverine forests, peat swamps, and other wetland forests
