The Katsura's Stag Beetle (Cyclommatus katsurai) is a rare and distinctive species of metallic stag beetle native to northern Vietnam. It is particularly associated with mountainous regions such as Cao Bang and Bac Kan. Unlike many slender-bodied Cyclommatus species, C. katsurai has a relatively compact and robust appearance. Males are characterized by strongly curved mandibles and a short, thick body, giving the species a distinctive silhouette. The species is especially notable for its rich reddish coloration. Typical males range from dark reddish-brown to vivid red, although darker individuals can also occur. Males generally measure around 35–40 mm, making this a relatively small species but one with a particularly striking appearance. C. katsurai is closely similar in appearance to Cyclommatus multidentatus, but can be distinguished by its more compact body and strongly curved mandibles. The arrangement of the inner teeth on the mandibles is also characteristic. Vietnamese specimens are highly interesting to collectors because the species is not commonly encountered in the international hobby. Its combination of vivid red coloration, unusual mandible shape, and restricted Vietnamese distribution makes it an attractive species for specialized stag beetle collections.
