Opacus Soriashi Stag Beetle Scientific Name: Gnaphaloryx opacus Common Name: Opacus Stag Beetle / Opacus Soriashi Stag Beetle Japanese Name: オパクスソリアシサビクワガタ The Opacus Soriashi Stag Beetle (Gnaphaloryx opacus) is a small and distinctive species of stag beetle distributed widely across South and Southeast Asia. Its range includes Vietnam, Myanmar, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Bali, the Andaman Islands, and the Nicobar Islands. Despite its relatively small size, G. opacus has a robust body and distinctive appearance. Males generally possess moderately developed mandibles, while females have a broader and more compact body shape. The species is known for considerable geographical variation in body shape and proportions. Vietnamese specimens are particularly interesting in the hobby. Recent captive-breeding records from Đắk Lắk, Vietnam, reported males exceeding 30 mm and females reaching approximately 29 mm. Vietnamese specimens may also appear broader and more robust than the elongated forms commonly associated with Java. The species has historically been divided into several geographical forms and subspecies, but modern taxonomic treatments have consolidated several of these names under Gnaphaloryx opacus. This includes names such as G. andamanus, G. burmeisteri, G. rugosus, and G. tonkinensis.
