Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, it is famous for its remarkable flower-like appearance and exceptional camouflage. Its enlarged, petal-shaped legs and pale white, pink, and occasionally greenish coloration allow it to blend into flowering vegetation. Rather than relying on a particular orchid species, the mantis uses its overall floral appearance to remain concealed while ambushing visiting insects. The species displays extreme sexual dimorphism. Adult females can reach approximately 6–7 cm in length and develop the characteristic broad, petal-like lobes on their legs. Adult males are dramatically smaller, usually around 2.5–3 cm, with a slender body and fully developed wings. Males also mature considerably faster than females, making breeding a particular challenge for keepers. Young nymphs look very different from adults. Newly hatched nymphs are typically dark with reddish or orange coloration, gradually developing the characteristic flower-like appearance as they mature. This dramatic transformation is one of the most fascinating aspects of the species. Orchid Mantises are predatory and should be provided with appropriately sized live prey. Flying insects such as fruit flies and flies are particularly suitable, especially as the mantis grows. Cannibalism can occur, so individuals should generally be housed separately. This species is considered an intermediate-level mantis rather than a beginner species.
