The Grandis Stag Beetle is one of the largest and most impressive members of the genus Dorcus, native to parts of South and Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, India, and southern China. Males are characterized by their large, powerful bodies and strongly developed mandibles. The species is highly valued by collectors for its impressive size and distinctive appearance, with exceptional males capable of exceeding 90 mm in captivity. Vietnamese Grandis are particularly sought after by collectors. Specimens from localities such as Da Lat are known in the Japanese hobby market, where large males are traded as premium locality specimens. The species is also well established in captive breeding. Under suitable conditions, captive-bred males can develop into exceptionally large individuals, making Grandis Stag Beetles attractive not only as display specimens but also as breeding projects. Recent taxonomic research has revised the classification of the Grandis group and proposed treating Dorcus grandis grandis as Dorcus hopei grandis. However, the traditional name Dorcus grandis remains widely used in the international hobby and commercial trade.
