The Platynota Shining Stag Beetle (Odontolabis platynota) is a small and distinctive species of stag beetle found in mainland Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its compact body, rounded appearance, and attractive glossy coloration. Compared with many large Odontolabis species, O. platynota remains relatively small. Males generally reach around 40–45 mm, while females have a particularly rounded and compact body shape that makes them easily recognizable. The species is associated with northern mainland Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and neighboring regions. Vietnamese specimens have been recorded from several localities and are occasionally encountered in the specialist beetle trade. Male O. platynota possess proportionally large mandibles for their body size, with distinctive projections along the mandibles and the sides of the head. The combination of a compact body and developed male mandibles gives the species a characteristic appearance within the genus. Taxonomy within the Odontolabis platynota complex has recently been revised. A 2025 molecular and morphological study treated O. platynota coomani as a junior synonym of O. platynota platynota and described a separate new species, Odontolabis taynguyensis, from central Vietnam. Therefore, locality information is particularly important when identifying Vietnamese specimens. Key Features Small and compact Odontolabis species Typically around 40–45 mm in males Rounded and attractive female body shape Developed male mandibles with distinctive projections Distributed in mainland Southeast Asia Vietnamese specimens are available in the specialist hobby Recent taxonomic revision makes locality data important Recommended for: Collectors interested in small Odontolabis species and geographically distinct Southeast Asian stag beetles.
