**Agama agama** **Common Names:** Common Agama, Rainbow Lizard, Red-headed Rock Agama *Agama agama* is one of the most recognizable agamid lizards of tropical Africa, famous for the spectacular coloration displayed by adult males. During periods of activity and breeding, males can develop a striking yellow head, vivid red throat, and a contrasting yellow, red, and black tail. This is a **diurnal and highly active species** that is commonly found in savanna, woodland, rocky areas, open habitats, and around human settlements. It is primarily terrestrial but readily climbs rocks, trees, walls, and other elevated surfaces to bask and observe its surroundings. Adult males are considerably more colorful than females and subordinate males. Females and juveniles are generally olive-green to brown, often marked with yellow spots, ocelli, or stripes. Males use body movements, head displays, and other visual signals during territorial and social interactions. The species feeds primarily on **insects and other small invertebrates**, including crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, and roaches. In captivity, a varied diet of appropriately sized feeder insects supplemented with calcium and vitamins is recommended. A spacious, well-ventilated enclosure with **strong UVB lighting, a high-intensity basking area, and a cooler zone for thermoregulation** is recommended. Rocks, branches, and other elevated surfaces should be provided for basking and climbing. *Agama agama* is widely distributed across tropical Africa and is recorded from countries including Cameroon, Nigeria, Chad, Central African Republic, South Sudan, and Sudan. The species is particularly well documented in northern Cameroon. **Reproduction:** Oviparous **Origin:** Cameroon **Type:** Wild-caught **Difficulty:** Intermediate **Conservation Status:** Least Concern
