The Yaksha Stag Beetle is a distinctive species of Dorcus native to the mountainous regions of South and Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Laos, China, and neighboring areas. Although it resembles the larger Antaeus Stag Beetle (Dorcus antaeus), the Yaksha Stag Beetle is generally smaller and more compact. Males have a robust body and strongly developed mandibles, giving them the characteristic appearance of a miniature large Dorcus species. Vietnamese specimens are particularly interesting to collectors because populations from different localities can show noticeable variation in body proportions, coloration, and mandible shape. Vietnamese material has been recorded from localities including Cao Bang and Yen Bai. The species is also attractive as a breeding species. Captive-bred individuals can reach considerably larger sizes than typical wild specimens, making Dorcus yaksha an interesting combination of rarity, distinctive morphology, and breeding potential. Vietnamese Yaksha Stag Beetles are relatively uncommon in the international hobby market, especially when offered with a precise locality such as Cao Bang or Yen Bai.
