**Argusianus argus** **Common Names:** Great Argus, Great Argus Pheasant The Great Argus (*Argusianus argus*) is a spectacular pheasant native to the forests of Southeast Asia. The male is renowned for its extraordinarily long ornamental feathers, which are covered with numerous large, eye-like markings known as ocelli. During courtship, the male spreads and displays these feathers in an impressive fan, creating one of the most remarkable visual displays among pheasants. The male has a predominantly brown and buff plumage with intricate patterns, a relatively small head, and elongated wing and tail feathers. The large ocelli on the ornamental feathers create an illusion of numerous eyes, a feature that has given the species its association with the mythical Argus of Greek mythology. Great Argus inhabits dense tropical lowland and hill forests, where it spends much of its time on the forest floor. It feeds on fruits, seeds, insects, and other small invertebrates, foraging among fallen leaves and vegetation. The species is generally solitary or found in loose associations outside the breeding season. Males establish display areas known as courts, where they perform elaborate courtship displays to attract females. The extraordinary feather patterns and highly specialized courtship behavior make the Great Argus one of the most iconic pheasants of the Asian tropics. **Scientific Name:** *Argusianus argus* **Family:** Phasianidae **Common Names:** Great Argus, Great Argus Pheasant **Distribution:** Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo **Habitat:** Tropical lowland and hill forests
