Boileau's Stag Beetle is a distinctive subspecies of the Rhaetulus crenatus group, native to northern mainland Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam and Laos. This species is characterized by its elegant, deer-like appearance and strongly curved mandibles. Males have a dark head and pronotum, dark femora, and a compact but powerful body. The pale cream-colored markings along the sides of the elytra provide an attractive contrast to its otherwise dark coloration. Adults can reach approximately 65 mm, making it one of the larger members of the Rhaetulus crenatus group. Vietnamese specimens from localities such as Yen Bai are particularly popular among collectors. Boileau's Stag Beetles are often compared with the closely related Speciosus Stag Beetle, but can be distinguished by characteristics including the coloration of the head, pronotum, femora, and the structure of the mandibles. Wild-caught Vietnamese specimens are regularly encountered in the specialist beetle market, while captive-bred individuals are also maintained by hobbyists.
