**Casuarius** **Common Name:** Cassowary Cassowaries (*Casuarius* spp.) are large, flightless birds native to the tropical forests of New Guinea and northeastern Australia. They are among the most distinctive birds in the world, characterized by their imposing size, powerful legs, vivid blue and red skin on the neck and head, and a prominent helmet-like structure called a casque on the top of the head. Their plumage is predominantly glossy black, with long, coarse feathers that resemble hair. The bare skin of the head and neck is brightly colored, varying among species, while the casque is particularly prominent in adults. Cassowaries also possess three toes on each foot, with the inner toe bearing a large, dagger-like claw that can serve as a formidable defensive weapon. Cassowaries inhabit dense tropical rainforests, swamps, woodland, and other forested environments. They are primarily fruit-eaters and play an important ecological role as seed dispersers, swallowing large fruits and transporting their seeds over considerable distances through the forest. They may also consume fungi, insects, small vertebrates, and other plant material. Generally solitary and secretive, cassowaries spend much of their time moving quietly through dense vegetation. Despite their inability to fly, they are powerful and agile runners capable of moving rapidly through difficult terrain. Their unusual appearance, impressive size, and important role in tropical forest ecosystems make cassowaries among the most remarkable members of the ratite group. **Scientific Name:** *Casuarius* spp. **Family:** Casuariidae **Common Name:** Cassowary **Distribution:** New Guinea and northeastern Australia **Habitat:** Tropical rainforests, swamps, woodlands, and forested areas
