**Tropical House Gecko (*Hemidactylus mabouia*)** The Tropical House Gecko (*Hemidactylus mabouia*) is a small and highly adaptable gecko native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is commonly found around human settlements as well as in forest, woodland, and savanna habitats. **Common Names:** Tropical House Gecko, African House Gecko, House Gecko, Cosmopolitan House Gecko **Distribution:** Widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, including Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Gabon, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Angola, and several other African countries. The species has also been introduced to many tropical regions outside Africa. **Habitat:** Forests, woodland, savanna, rocky areas, buildings, and other warm environments. It is particularly well adapted to living around human structures. **Lifestyle:** Mainly nocturnal and semi-arboreal. Individuals are often found climbing walls, tree trunks, rocks, and other surfaces at night. **Diet:** Primarily insectivorous, feeding on small insects and other arthropods such as crickets, roaches, flies, moths, and ants. **Appearance:** A small, slender gecko with a variable grayish, brownish, or pale coloration. The body may display darker markings or bands, while the tail is often distinctly patterned. **Origin:** Wild-Caught (WC), Cameroon. **Difficulty:** Beginner to Intermediate. A vertically oriented enclosure with climbing surfaces, cork bark, branches, hiding places, appropriate ventilation, and moderate humidity is recommended. **Special Feature:** An adaptable African house gecko with a wide natural distribution and a strong association with human environments. **Taxonomic Note:** *Hemidactylus mabouia* has a long history of taxonomic and nomenclatural confusion, including historical records assigned to related *Hemidactylus* species. Locality information is therefore valuable when documenting wild-caught specimens. :::
