Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia Common name: White-lipped Herald Snake Other names: Red-lipped Snake, Herald Snake Family: Colubridae Distribution: Sub-Saharan Africa, including Cameroon Lifestyle: Terrestrial and semi-arboreal Habitat: Moist savannas, grasslands, forest edges, woodland, and montane habitats Reproduction: Oviparous Adult size: Usually around 60–80 cm, occasionally approaching 1 meter Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia is a distinctive African colubrid commonly known as the White-lipped Herald Snake or Red-lipped Snake. It is a slender, active snake characterized by a dark marking around the sides of the head and a contrasting pale or brightly colored upper lip. The species has a very broad distribution across sub-Saharan Africa, including Cameroon. In Cameroon, it has been recorded from a wide range of elevations, from approximately 160 meters to over 2,000 meters, and occurs in both lowland and montane environments. Its dorsal coloration varies from grey and brown to olive or nearly black, often with scattered white spots. Juveniles and subadults may show more distinct transverse markings, while adults can develop a more subdued appearance. The underside is generally white, cream, or pale brown. Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia is primarily terrestrial but may also climb through vegetation. It is an active predator that feeds mainly on amphibians and other small vertebrate prey. The species is oviparous, with females producing clutches of eggs. It is relatively widespread in Africa but remains uncommon in the specialist captive trade, making well-documented Cameroon specimens of particular interest to collectors of African colubrids.
