**Rhyticeros undulatus** **Common Name:** Wreathed Hornbill The Wreathed Hornbill (*Rhyticeros undulatus*) is a large and striking hornbill native to the forests of South and Southeast Asia. It is named for the prominent series of transverse grooves, or "wrinkles," along the base of its bill, which form a distinctive casque-like structure. Adults have predominantly dark plumage with a pale to bluish-white tail and a large, powerful bill. The throat and facial skin can vary in color, with males typically displaying a more vivid yellowish or reddish throat pouch. The bill is topped by a prominent casque with characteristic horizontal ridges, giving the species its distinctive appearance. The Wreathed Hornbill inhabits primary and mature lowland forests, as well as forested foothills and mountainous regions. It spends much of its time in the forest canopy, feeding primarily on fruits such as figs, while also consuming insects, small reptiles, and other animal prey. Like many hornbills, it has a remarkable breeding strategy in which the female seals herself inside a natural tree cavity, leaving a narrow opening through which the male delivers food. This behavior provides protection for the female and her developing chicks throughout the nesting period. With its enormous bill, deeply ridged casque, striking coloration, and fascinating nesting behavior, the Wreathed Hornbill is one of the most impressive hornbills of the Asian rainforest. **Scientific Name:** *Rhyticeros undulatus* **Family:** Bucerotidae **Common Name:** Wreathed Hornbill **Distribution:** South and Southeast Asia **Habitat:** Primary and mature tropical forest, forested foothills, and montane forest
