**Caecilians** are a fascinating group of limbless amphibians belonging to the order Gymnophiona. Despite their snake-like or worm-like appearance, they are true amphibians and are more closely related to frogs and salamanders than to reptiles. Most caecilians are adapted to a burrowing lifestyle and spend much of their lives underground or in moist soil. They have elongated, cylindrical bodies, reduced or absent limbs, and highly specialized sensory organs that help them navigate their subterranean environment. African caecilians include several distinctive species, some of which can reach impressive sizes. Their unusual appearance, secretive behavior, and unique evolutionary adaptations make them highly interesting to specialist amphibian keepers and collectors. **Common name:** Caecilian **Order:** Gymnophiona **Class:** Amphibia **Distribution:** Tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas **Lifestyle:** Primarily fossorial **Notable features:** Limbless body, burrowing adaptations, highly specialized sensory structures
