**Pongo abelii** **Common Name:** Sumatran Orangutan The Sumatran Orangutan (*Pongo abelii*) is a great ape endemic to the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is one of the most distinctive arboreal mammals in the world, with long arms, powerful hands and feet, and a reddish-orange coat adapted to life in the forest canopy. Adult males are considerably larger than females and may develop prominent cheek pads and a throat pouch as they mature. Sumatran Orangutans spend most of their lives in trees, moving through the canopy using their long arms and strong grasping hands and feet. Their highly flexible joints and powerful limbs allow them to travel between branches while rarely descending to the ground. Their diet consists primarily of fruits, supplemented by young leaves, bark, flowers, insects, and other plant material. Fruits form an especially important part of their diet, and their movements through the forest contribute to the dispersal of seeds and the regeneration of tropical forests. Generally more arboreal and social than some other orangutan populations, Sumatran Orangutans may form temporary associations around abundant food sources, while adult males are typically more solitary. They are highly intelligent animals capable of sophisticated problem-solving and tool use. The Sumatran Orangutan is critically endangered, with its survival threatened by habitat loss, forest fragmentation, and other human pressures. As one of Asia's great apes, it represents an important symbol of the biodiversity and ecological value of Sumatra's remaining tropical forests. **Scientific Name:** *Pongo abelii* **Family:** Hominidae **Common Name:** Sumatran Orangutan **Distribution:** Northern Sumatra, Indonesia **Habitat:** Tropical rainforests, lowland forests, and peat swamp forests
