**Varanus exanthematicus** **Common Name:** Savannah Monitor / Bosc's Monitor **Japanese Name:** サバンナオオトカゲ *Varanus exanthematicus* is a robust, terrestrial monitor lizard native to the savanna and semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of the most commonly kept African monitor species in the international reptile trade. This species has a compact, heavily built body, powerful limbs, long curved claws, and a relatively short tail compared with many other monitor lizards. Its brown to yellowish-brown coloration is marked by distinctive pale circular and ring-like patterns across the back and neck. Savannah Monitors are primarily terrestrial and diurnal. They are powerful diggers and commonly shelter in burrows, termite mounds, fallen logs, and other underground refuges. Their diet consists mainly of insects and other invertebrates, although larger individuals may consume a variety of animal prey. The species has a wide distribution across central and western sub-Saharan Africa, extending from Senegal and surrounding West African countries through the Sahel and into parts of Central and East Africa. Adults commonly reach around 80–120 cm in total length, with particularly large individuals growing beyond this range. Despite their popularity, they require substantial floor space, appropriate temperatures, strong ventilation, and a suitable substrate that allows natural digging behavior. **Distribution:** West, Central, and parts of East Africa **Habitat:** Savanna, grassland, dry woodland, and semi-arid environments **Activity:** Diurnal **Lifestyle:** Terrestrial / Burrowing **Diet:** Primarily insects and other invertebrates **Adult Size:** Commonly around 80–120 cm total length
