**Fire Skink (*Lepidothyris fernandi*)** The Fire Skink is a striking West and Central African skink, renowned for its brilliant coloration and glossy, metallic appearance. Its body typically displays vivid reddish-orange, copper, and golden tones contrasted with dark markings, giving the species its distinctive common name. The species is distributed across parts of West and Central Africa, including Cameroon, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Congo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana. It inhabits humid tropical environments, including forest habitats and areas with moist leaf litter and soil. Fire Skinks are terrestrial and spend much of their time among leaf litter, soil, and dense ground vegetation. They are generally secretive but can become active during suitable warm and humid conditions. This species is an oviparous skink and has a robust body with strong limbs and non-retractable claws. Its vivid coloration makes it one of the most visually distinctive skinks in the African reptile trade. The species is also known under the scientific name *Mochlus fernandi*, which is currently used by some taxonomic references. *Lepidothyris fernandi* remains widely used in the international reptile trade. **Scientific Name:** *Lepidothyris fernandi* **Current Taxonomic Name:** *Mochlus fernandi* **Common Name:** Fire Skink / African Fire Skink **Family:** Scincidae **Origin:** West and Central Africa **Habitat:** Humid tropical forests, leaf litter and moist terrestrial environments **Reproduction:** Oviparous **Lifestyle:** Terrestrial and primarily ground-dwelling
