**Symphalangus syndactylus** **Common Name:** Siamang The Siamang (*Symphalangus syndactylus*) is the largest member of the gibbon family and a highly distinctive arboreal ape native to the rainforests of Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. It has long arms, a shaggy black coat, and a characteristic throat sac known as a gular pouch. When fully inflated, this pouch greatly amplifies the animal's loud, resonant calls. Siamangs are exceptionally well adapted to life in the forest canopy. Their long arms and powerful hands allow them to swing efficiently between branches, while their reduced thumbs help them maintain a strong grip during brachiation. They spend most of their lives in the trees and rarely descend to the ground. Their diet consists primarily of leaves and fruits, supplemented by flowers, shoots, and occasional insects. They are important consumers of forest vegetation and fruit and may contribute to seed dispersal as they move through the canopy. Siamangs are highly social and typically live in small family groups consisting of an adult pair and their offspring. Pairs frequently perform loud, coordinated vocal displays, which help reinforce social bonds and establish their territory. Their calls can carry considerable distances through the rainforest. The Siamang is an important representative of Southeast Asia's forest-dwelling apes. Its large size, entirely black coat, powerful brachiating abilities, and remarkable vocalizations make it one of the most distinctive members of the gibbon family. **Scientific Name:** *Symphalangus syndactylus* **Family:** Hylobatidae **Common Name:** Siamang **Distribution:** Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula **Habitat:** Tropical rainforests and other mature forest habitats
