**Dendrolagus ursinus** **Common Names:** Ursine Tree-kangaroo, Vogelkop Tree-kangaroo The Ursine Tree-kangaroo (*Dendrolagus ursinus*) is a distinctive arboreal marsupial native to the forests of western New Guinea. It has a robust body, relatively short limbs compared with terrestrial kangaroos, and a long, thick tail that provides balance while moving through the trees. Its dark brown to blackish coat gives it a characteristic appearance and is the origin of its common name, “Ursine Tree-kangaroo.” Unlike the familiar ground-dwelling kangaroos and wallabies, tree-kangaroos are highly adapted to an arboreal lifestyle. The Ursine Tree-kangaroo has strong forelimbs, flexible joints, and broad, well-developed feet that allow it to climb tree trunks and maneuver among branches. It inhabits tropical montane forests, where it spends much of its time in trees but may also descend to the ground. Its diet consists primarily of leaves, fruits, flowers, and other plant material, supplemented occasionally by other available foods. The species is generally solitary and relatively elusive, reflecting its life in dense forest habitats. Its specialized climbing abilities and unusual combination of kangaroo-like and arboreal adaptations make the Ursine Tree-kangaroo one of the most distinctive mammals of New Guinea. **Scientific Name:** *Dendrolagus ursinus* **Family:** Macropodidae **Common Names:** Ursine Tree-kangaroo, Vogelkop Tree-kangaroo **Distribution:** Western New Guinea **Habitat:** Tropical montane forests and other forested habitats
