**Agama africana** **Common Name:** West African Agama *Agama africana* is a colorful and active agamid lizard native to the tropical regions of West Africa. It is a **diurnal, terrestrial species** that spends much of the day basking and actively searching for food. Adult males can develop attractive coloration, particularly around the head and throat, while females and juveniles are generally more subdued in appearance. Like other members of the genus *Agama*, males use visual displays, body movements, and posture to communicate with rivals and potential mates. The species is associated with **humid tropical forests, forest edges, open woodland, and other warm environments**. It is an agile lizard that readily uses rocks, branches, fallen logs, and other elevated surfaces for basking and observation. Its natural diet consists primarily of **insects and other small invertebrates**, including crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, and other appropriately sized prey. In captivity, *A. africana* benefits from a **spacious, well-ventilated enclosure with strong UVB lighting, a dedicated basking area, and a cooler zone for thermoregulation**. Rocks, branches, and other climbing structures should be provided to encourage natural basking and activity. **Distribution:** West Africa, with current taxonomic references recording the species from Liberia, Côte d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Ghana. The taxonomy of *A. africana* and closely related *Agama* species has undergone significant revision, and historical records from other regions may refer to different species or former synonyms. **Reproduction:** Oviparous **Origin:** Cameroon locality **Type:** Wild-caught **Difficulty:** Intermediate
