**Python regius** **Common Name:** Ball Python / Royal Python **Japanese Name:** ボールニシキヘビ *Python regius* is a small to medium-sized python native to West and Central Africa. It is one of the most popular pet snakes in the world, particularly well known for its calm temperament, manageable size, and extraordinary variety of captive-bred color and pattern morphs. Ball Pythons have a compact, muscular body with a relatively short tail. Their natural coloration consists mainly of dark brown to black markings contrasted with golden, tan, and cream patterns. They are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular and spend much of their time in rodent burrows, abandoned termite mounds, and other sheltered locations. Their natural diet consists mainly of small mammals. When threatened, a Ball Python commonly coils its body tightly around its head, forming a compact ball. This defensive behavior gives the species its common name. Ball Pythons are oviparous. Females lay a relatively small clutch of large eggs and may coil around the eggs during incubation. The species is distributed across parts of West and Central Africa, including savanna, grassland, open woodland, and agricultural landscapes. Captive breeding has produced a huge number of established morphs, ranging from relatively common mutations to highly valuable multi-gene combinations. **Distribution:** West and Central Africa **Habitat:** Savanna, grassland, open woodland, and agricultural areas **Activity:** Nocturnal / Crepuscular **Lifestyle:** Terrestrial / Burrowing **Diet:** Primarily small mammals **Reproduction:** Oviparous **Adult Size:** Approximately 1–1.5 m, occasionally larger
