**Ectomomyrmex astutus** is a large predatory ponerine ant distributed across tropical and subtropical parts of Asia and Australia. It is particularly known for its solitary hunting behavior and powerful predatory nature. Workers are relatively large, measuring approximately 9–12 mm in many populations, while queens can reach around 12–13 mm. The body is predominantly dark blackish brown, with reddish-brown mandibles, antennae, and parts of the legs, giving the species a distinctive appearance. Ectomomyrmex astutus is primarily a predator of other arthropods. Workers actively hunt prey individually rather than relying on large cooperative foraging trails. Observations have recorded workers attacking termites, making this species particularly interesting for keepers who enjoy observing natural predatory behavior. The species occurs across a broad region including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo, Vietnam, China, India, and Australia. It is generally associated with forest habitats, leaf litter, rotten wood, and other humid ground environments. Colonies are relatively modest in size compared with highly populous ant species. The species is monogynous and does not require hibernation. Founding is semi-claustral, meaning the queen forages for food while raising her first brood. **Species:** Ectomomyrmex astutus **Common Name:** Astutus Ponerine Ant **Distribution:** South & Southeast Asia, Australia **Habitat:** Tropical forests and forest floor **Queen Size:** Approximately 12–13 mm **Worker Size:** Approximately 9–12 mm **Colony Type:** Monogynous **Diet:** Predominantly predatory **Founding:** Semi-claustral **Hibernation:** None
