Native to several Indonesian islands, it is renowned for its enormous size, powerful build, muscular tail, and formidable predatory abilities. Adults have rugged, scaly skin that is generally grayish-brown to dark brown, with strong limbs, sharp claws, and a long, muscular tail. Their elongated heads and powerful jaws are adapted for capturing and consuming large prey. They also possess a highly developed sense of smell, using their forked tongues to detect chemical cues in their surroundings. Komodo Dragons inhabit tropical savannas, open woodlands, and forested areas. They are carnivorous predators that feed on a variety of animals, including deer, wild pigs, smaller reptiles, and carrion. Although adults are primarily terrestrial, they can also swim and climb when necessary. As apex predators in their native ecosystems, Komodo Dragons play an important ecological role. They are classified as Endangered, with habitat changes, limited geographic distribution, and other human-related pressures contributing to their conservation challenges. **Distribution:** Indonesian islands, including Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Gili Dasami **Habitat:** Tropical savannas, open woodlands, and forested environments **Diet:** Carnivorous; deer, wild pigs, smaller reptiles, and carrion **Behavior:** Primarily terrestrial; solitary for much of the time **Conservation Status:** Endangered (IUCN)
