**Dasypeltis fasciata** **Common name:** Central African Egg-eating Snake **Other names:** Western Forest Egg-eater, Western Forest Egg-eating Snake **Family:** Colubridae **Distribution:** West and Central Africa, including Cameroon **Lifestyle:** Terrestrial and semi-arboreal **Habitat:** Tropical and lowland forests, forest edges, and wooded habitats **Reproduction:** Oviparous **Adult size:** Approximately 60–72 cm *Dasypeltis fasciata* is a distinctive African egg-eating snake associated primarily with forest habitats. It has a slender body, a relatively small head, vertical pupils, and a short tail. Its coloration is generally grey to pale brown, with numerous broad dark saddle-shaped bands extending along the body. The species occurs across parts of West and Central Africa, including Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. Unlike the more widespread *Dasypeltis scabra*, *D. fasciata* is strongly associated with forest environments. It is considered semi-arboreal and may climb into vegetation while searching for food or shelter. Like other members of the genus *Dasypeltis*, this species is highly specialized for feeding on bird eggs. Its jaws and throat are adapted to swallowing eggs whole, while specialized vertebral structures allow it to break the eggshell after ingestion. The empty shell is subsequently regurgitated. The Central African Egg-eating Snake is uncommon in the captive trade and is particularly attractive to specialist keepers interested in unusual African colubrids. Its forest-associated ecology, distinctive banded pattern, and highly specialized egg-eating adaptations make it a fascinating species for an advanced collection. **Notable features:** Forest-associated lifestyle, semi-arboreal behavior, dark banded pattern, vertical pupils, specialized egg-eating anatomy, and rarity in captivity.
