**African Fat-tailed Gecko (*Hemitheconyx caudicinctus*)** The African Fat-tailed Gecko (*Hemitheconyx caudicinctus*) is a distinctive terrestrial gecko native to the savanna regions of West Africa. It is well known for its robust body, characteristic fat-storing tail, velvety skin, and gentle appearance. **Distribution:** West Africa, ranging from Senegal eastward through countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and northern Cameroon. **Habitat:** Savanna, dry woodland, scrubland, and other relatively dry terrestrial environments. Individuals spend much of the day sheltered in burrows, crevices, or other protected areas. **Size:** Approximately 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) in total length. **Diet:** Primarily insectivorous. Suitable feeder insects include crickets, roaches, mealworms, and other appropriately sized insects. **Behavior:** Mainly nocturnal and terrestrial. This species is generally calm and spends the daytime hiding before becoming active after dark. **Appearance:** The species typically has a dark brown to reddish-brown base coloration with contrasting pale bands and markings. Its thick, segmented tail serves as an important fat-storage reserve. **Origin:** Wild-Caught (WC), Cameroon locality. **Difficulty:** Beginner to Intermediate. A secure terrestrial enclosure with appropriate hides, moderate temperatures, good ventilation, and a suitable substrate is recommended. **Note:** Captive-bred African Fat-tailed Geckos are widely established in the international pet trade, while wild-caught specimens from specific localities can be particularly interesting to keepers seeking natural coloration and geographic provenance.
